3 Ways To Troubleshoot Your Furnace Issues

Are you noticing that when your furnace is running the air coming out of the vents seems cool or cold? Though this is not an enjoyable feeling, it is a very common problem that many homeowners experience.

The good news is that there are certain things you can check to see why your furnace is producing cold air.

Examine these three things:

  • Check your thermostat settings
  • Ensure the pilot light hasn’t gone out
  • Change your air filter

If you still aren’t sure what’s going on after examining these things, give us a call! Our furnace repair company can get you feeling warm again!

Check Your Thermostat

Be sure that you have your thermostat on the correct settings. If the thermostat is set to ON, the blower will continuously run, even when the furnace isn’t actively heating the room. This will cause the air coming through the vents to feel close to room temperature.

By changing your thermostat settings to AUTO the fan will only run when the furnace is heating the air, which will lead to a more comfortable indoor environment!

With today’s thermostat technology it is quick and easy to do this, and you can even do it from your smartphone!

Check The Pilot Light

Another reason your furnace may be blowing cold air is because the pilot light went out. Most modern furnaces don’t have a pilot light, but many homes in the Evansville and Owensboro areas have older model furnaces that still utilize a pilot light. The pilot light is a small flame that is used to heat the system up. When this light goes out, the furnace isn’t capable of producing heat.

To fix this, you’ll need to use a lighter to reignite the pilot light. We would recommend that you contact a professional to handle this for you if you don’t feel comfortable lighting it yourself, or if you are having a difficult time locating the pilot light.

If your furnace is located in attic, use caution when climbing up the ladder. If you don’t feel comfortable climbing up in the attic, contact us today!

Change Your Air Filter

Air filters are an essential element of your HVAC system. Most common furnace issues are caused by dirty or clogged air filters. When the air filter is too dirty, it blocks the airflow over the heat exchanger, which can cause the system to overheat and shutdown the unit.

By routinely changing your air filter, not only will it lessen the chance of breakdowns–it can also help you save money on your heating bill! Be sure to change your air filter routinely once every 30 – 60 days.
