When To Replace Your Water Heater

There are certain appliances that almost every homeowner relies on every day to experience the quality of life that they’ve come to enjoy. Luxuries such as electricity, warm & cool air, and running water are likely among the top things that come to mind when you think about you day-to-day needs.

An appliance that most homeowners use daily is their water heater. Most folks associate their water heater with warm showers and warm faucet water. And while those are two very important uses of the water heater, you also need it to run laundry and clean dishes in the dishwasher. So while it may seem like an out of sight, out of mind appliance, your water heater plays a significant role in keeping your house functional.

However, like most household appliances, your water heater has a limited lifespan and will eventually need to be replaced. In this article, we are going to share a few signs that it is time to replace your water heater.

How Long Do Water Heaters Last?

The average lifespan of a water heater is roughly 10 years. However, if your water heater is regularly serviced by a professional, it can last longer. But even with routine maintenance, you will begin noticing a decrease in performance as the years go by.

So before you wonder what the signs of replacement are, first determine how old the heater is. If it is older than 10 years, then you’ve likely found your answer. But there are other signs to be on the lookout for if it is less than 10 years old.

Common Signs of Water Heater Issues

There are five major signs to be on the lookout for when you suspect that your water heater is about to bite the dust.

These signs include:

  • Rust in the water
  • Limited or no hot water
  • Cloudy or dirty water
  • Banging noises
  • Leaks around the tank

Sometimes, these issues can be resolved with a simple tank flush, so it’s important to have a professional come take a look before you invest in a new water heater.

Rust In The Water

Rusty water is a sure sign that there is corrosion taking place in the tank. This is an issue that almost always requires replacement, as it means that interior components of the unit are breaking down and corrosion from them is getting into the water. If you are noticing this, contact Perfection today!

Little To No Hot Water

If your water heater is taking an abnormally long time to produce hot water for your faucets or shower, there is something wrong. This is an issue that sometimes can be repaired before replacement. So be sure to have an expert properly troubleshoot the problem first.

Cloudy Or Dirty Water

If you begin to notice cloudy water coming from your faucet when filling a glass with water, this is an indication of sediment build up in your tank. Though this can often be remedied by a simple water heater flush, there’s always the chance that it is a much larger issue with the tank itself which requires an upgrade.

Banging or Knocking Sounds

If it sounds like your water heater is tumbling down a mountain when you are taking a hot shower, then you likely have something wrong with your tank. This occurs when there is either sediment build up or a corroded component which has caused the tank to build up pressure.

If you are noticing these sounds, locate the water heater and place your hand on the side of the tank to feel the pressure. If it feels as if there is so much pressure built up that it’s about to pop, contact someone to come take a look.

Leaks Around The Tank

Finally, if you notice leaks around the tank, you need to contact a professional immediately. Obviously, this means that the tank is beginning to completely fail and could lead to a big mess if not addressed right away.
