Preparing Your HVAC System For Vacation

checking off checklist

As you create your checklist of things to do before you leave for summer vacation, don’t forget to add your HVAC system! We know vacation preparation can be stressful, so we put together a list of things to check off to make sure your air conditioner is good to go while you are gone.

Clear Vents

Before departing on vacation, make sure all of your air vents are open to ensure airflow. Blocked air vents can decrease efficiency and cause your utility bill to rise and your system to work harder.

Clean Up Debris

Clearing up the surrounding area of your outdoor HVAC system will help your unit perform efficiently while you are away. Debris such as tree limbs, leaves, and grass clippings can cause your unit to work harder.

Set Your Thermostat

There are many factors to consider when deciding what temperature to set your home on while you are away on vacation. Here are a few questions to evaluate before making your decision:

  1. Will pets be home while you are away?

  2. Will you have a house sitter?

  3. Do you have indoor plants?

  4. What are the humidity levels for your area?

While we do not recommend shutting off your HVAC system when you are on vacation, we do suggest setting your thermostat to a higher temperature to save on your energy bill. Consider a few of these factors before deciding on what temperature to leave your home on.

We advise not surpassing 85 degrees in the summer or below 60 degrees in the winter. If your home becomes too hot, the humidity levels will rise and potentially cause damage to your furniture and flooring. Below 60 degrees in the winter is an ideal temperature to help prevent your pipes from freezing.

A smart thermostat can adjust your home’s heating and cooling temperature settings for optimal performance. This thermostat can be adjusted from your phone while you are on vacation and may be a smart investment before your trip. Additionally, you can turn on your cool temperatures before arriving home.

Close Blinds/Curtains

In addition to privacy, closing your curtains and blinds can help keep the heat from entering your home. Sunlight beaming indoors can alter the temperature and cause your system to continuously run.

Schedule Unit Tune Up

Before leaving your home for vacation, it is best to schedule a HVAC check up for your unit. Your Perfection technician will ensure your system is in the best shape and functioning efficiently. If you recently have had a check up, we recommend making sure your air filters are cleaned before departure.
